Curt’s Cold Butt Ride

I joined the Atlanta ADV Rider’s Meetup for a ride starting from Clayton, GA. The group had a house rented for the weekend with rides for different riding styles. The small(ish) bikes had some challenging rides on Saturday. The Tiger Fall Foliage route provided good riding for both the small(ish) bikes and bikes like mine. I am looking for a good weekend to ride some small bikes at Highland Park and take another trails course at the MSF dirtbike school … Read More

Best of British Tour – Triumph 2020 Model Preview

I enjoyed an event previewing the Triumph 2020 models. I was most interested in the new Tiger 900 Rally Range. Sitting on the Tiger, it felt lighter and more nimble than my current bike. I’d like to see the bike kitted out with luggage and feel the differences between the riding modes. The handguards were plastic and the engine guards left a lot of molding unprotected. The Rocket 3 is an impressive machine with a 2458 cc powerplant. Other models … Read More

Winter Riding

Winter weather in Georgia has extremes. Sometimes we have cold, icy weather. When the weather is beautiful, it is time for some great riding. Even though the previous day was rainy, the forest roads in the Cohuttas were dry enough. We weren’t able to ride the full route we originally wanted to. We found one of the forest service roads closed. Here is a link to the map of Forest Service Road closures and the Forest Service information on the … Read More

Puerto Varas

I flew from Santiago to Puerto Montt where I met our guide, Daniel. We are a group of four. Dave and his Jane are from Maine.  We all have many interests in common including world travel, mountain biking, outdoor sports, … We spent the day organizing our gear, getting acquainted, enjoying some nice food and drinks, and previewing our route.

Santiago

I avoided the protests in Santiago downtown area. Staying in Vitacura, I enjoyed walks in a very modern, international city. The nearby mall had top end shopping and many places to eat. I enjoyed walking through nearby parks, visiting museums, a scooting around on the Lime scooters.

Departure flight this evening

All my bags are packed, I’m ready to go. Preparation for this trip has been different from past rides. I am focused more on my packing than on my motorcycle. For long trips, much of the road experience depends on the preparation of my bike…. I miss that. I started packing by filling my bikes panniers with what I am taking. There is no kitchen equipment, camping/sleeping gear, or emergency tools to bring along. So the packing puzzle was based … Read More

Ready to ride

Tommorow evening I fly from Atlanta to Santiago, Chile. As with previous rides, I enjoy having a “theme” for the ride. The time spent on a bike provides a certain meditative quality. It is a chance to shift my thoughts into new areas. My first Motorcycle trip focused on rediscovering America and challenging myself by achieving a teenage dream. On this ride, I explored the gulf coast, the Mississippi River, the Ozarks, Route 66 (the mother road), and places of … Read More

T-4 Weeks

I’ve been shopping a bit in preparation for the trip. Not a lot that is critical, Moto-Skivees, point and shoot camera, replaced Sena headset, gloves, Mosko Moto bag. Also enjoying family time as Atlanta United competes for MLS championship.

T-5 Update

After reviewing the route, preparation materials previously provided by Moto Patagonia, and the current weather conditions, I created my packing checklist. I am using my existing bike and panniers to figure out what is likely to fit in the luggage provided by Moto Patagonia.

T-6 weeks to Patagonia Trip

So it’s time to start more detailed planning for the Patagonia Trip. I expect some riding on unpaved roads. Whenever I have the opportunity, I ride around on forest roads. I reviewed the Patagonia route, weather conditions in Chile and Argentina, and created a packing list. I setup my phone for making blog posts and created my trip report on ADV Rider. https://advrider.com/f/threads/patagonia-puerto-varas-to-ushuaia.1411443/
